Karamoor Estate's contemporary labels are beginning to be seen as the eastern Pa. winery releases its new wines.

Karamoor Estate Winery, which opened a new tasting room this year, now is introducing a more contemporary label with its newest releases.

The new look for the winery in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, began recently with the introduction of the 2019 vintage of its Petit Verdot and it also will be affixed to to the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2021 Pinot Gris, which will be released soon. Eventually, customers will see it on all of their Karamoor wine bottles.

Winemaker Kevin Robinson said that “it was the right time for a facelift from our original Estate label to a more refined, fresh look to go with the next generation of ownership, and the launching of our outdoor tasting wine bar we call the Terrace,” he said.

Nicholas and Athena Karabots founded the winery, establishing it in 2006 on their 250-acre parcel of Pennsylvania farmland. The vineyard covers 27 acres of sloping fields on the property, located outside the Fort Washington/Blue Bell area. Internationally recognized viticulturist Lucie Morton designed the vineyard, planting all vinifera: Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Malbec, and Pinot Gris. In 2006, the first 10 acres were planted; in 2008, an additional 5 acres; and in 2013, the final 10 acres were planted.

Per its Facebook page, the wines “are modeled after the red wines of St. Emillion in Bordeaux and the white wines of Burgundy.” The state-of-the-art winery opened in fall 2011.

Robinson worked for more than 30 years in the wine industry of northern California before joining Karamoor Estate in 2011.

Without an accessible tasting room, the winery and its delicious wines for years have remained largely off the radar of most consumers, despite a growing list of awards. The business then had a series of unfortunate events take place, starting with a fire in November 2020 that damaged the barn that was being renovated into an accessible tasting room. Nicholas died a little more than two months later, and in the summer of 2021 a storm cell that included hail and high winds took out some of the vines.

In July of 2022, the one end of the barn that avoided the flames opened as a tasting room called The Terrace at Karamoor, and it has welcomed customers on weekends ever since. Closing now for the winter, there are plans for upgrades that will “make it a bit more cozy and inviting,” Robinson said.

The wines in almost all cases are dry.

Karamoor worked with Niagara Label, just outside of Buffalo, New York, to create a re-tooled look of the original label while at the same time preserving the original “K” logo that Nicholas Karabots has used as branding for a number of his businesses over the years, Robinson said. The winery logo has been reduced in size and all the lettering is in red, with a black background.

“Red foil stamping on a black background really makes the logo ‘pop,’ and on a textured paper gives the feel of richness and increased value,” Robinson said.

The labels for the white wines feature a gold foil logo stamp on an off-white background, giving the same effect.

The rosé has a silver foil stamp on a white background.
